Cooking rice is a simple process, and there are several methods you can use. Here’s a basic method for cooking white rice on the stovetop:

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of white rice
  • 2 cups of water
  • A pinch of salt (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Rinse the rice: Place the rice in a fine-mesh sieve or fine colander and rinse it under cold running water until the water runs clear. This helps remove excess starch and prevents the rice from becoming too sticky.
  2. Measure the water: Use a 1:2 ratio of rice to water. For 1 cup of rice, you’ll need 2 cups of water. If you want to add salt, you can do so now by adding a pinch to the water.
  3. Boil the water: In a medium-sized saucepan, bring the water to a boil over high heat.
  4. Add the rice: Once the water is boiling, add the rinsed rice to the pot. Give it a quick stir to distribute the rice evenly in the water.
  5. Reduce heat: Reduce the heat to low, cover the saucepan with a tight-fitting lid, and let it simmer for about 18-20 minutes. Avoid lifting the lid during this time to ensure the steam stays inside and cooks the rice properly.
  6. Check for doneness: After 18-20 minutes, remove the saucepan from the heat but keep it covered. Let it sit for an additional 5-10 minutes. This allows the rice to steam and finish cooking. The rice should be tender and fluffy when it’s done.
  7. Fluff and serve: Use a fork to fluff the rice, which separates the grains. Serve the cooked rice as a side dish or as a base for your favorite dishes.

Keep in mind that cooking times may vary slightly depending on the type of rice you’re using (e.g., long-grain, short-grain, basmati), so always refer to the package instructions for specific cooking times and water ratios. Enjoy your freshly cooked rice!
